Today

*knock, knock*

Me: opens door

Grey haired lady at door: "Hi. I'm canvasing for the Canadian Cancer Society and am collecting donations."

Me: "Oh, how wonderful, the Cancer Society has really helped me. I'm sorry but I don't have any money to donate."

Lady: "Well I can come back later, even at the end of the month."

Me: "I'm really sorry but I don't have anything."

*long painful awkward silence*

Me: "I'm actually just dealing with cancer right now and recovering from everything..."

*more awkward silence*

Me: awkwardly begins stumbling about how the Cancer Society has benefited me and how I'm so grateful...

*lady starts backing away from door and down the stairs*

Lady turns her back on me and leaves.

I believe that door to door sale, money collections etc should be banned. For one the person knocking has no idea who's door they are knocking on and the danger they could be putting themselves in and from the other way around the person opening the door doesn't know who is on the doorstep and how that person may react to any thing they say to them.

This person probably had no training on how to deal with the situation and how to bow out of asking gracefully without maybe looking patronising or down right rude.

Just chalk it down to a person with lousy people skills that was trying to do a good thing.

I think she thought I was lying about having cancer.

Maybe. People do say lots of things that aren't true to get rid of doorstep callers, so I guess they get a bit sceptical about things people tell them, but don't let it worry you, because you know you weren't lying and it really doesn't matter what some random person thinks about you.

Wow, how rude of her...

Though I've just had 3 sales people at my door this week. I'm making a "No Soliciting" sign.
